Welcome to Welgegund
Come discover wine country that is quintessentially Tuscan in the heart of the Boland. Just like the vines have created and shaped a distinctive Mediterranean culture since Roman times, so they have woven their magic here in a tucked-away corner of the Western Cape. Nestled in the Hawequa mountains at the end of an oak-lined cul-de-sac in Wellington is Welgegund. This family-owned boutique wine estate rejoices in its South African roots whilst embracing the savoir-faire of the Continent.
Welgegund means well-bestowed and you don’t have to venture far to experience the fruits of its blessings. For the past decade the estate has been producing award-winning premium wines. In the Mediterranean, wine is a way of life and it is this philosophy that is celebrated at Welgegund. A passion for the land and its produce is savoured in every bottle.
Welgegund is the only farm in South Africa which bottles Carignan, a southern French grape varietal of Spanish origin. The well-known restaurant critic, Michael Olivier lists Welgegund Carignan 2004 in his book ‘Crush’ as one of the 100 South African wines you should be drinking now.
A visit to Welgegund, a scenic 50 minute drive from Cape Town, is a must for every connoisseur and wine lover.
A Mediterranean flavour
At Welgegund, we invite you to sip, savour and celebrate the Mediterranean way of life. Food and wine are synonymous with the hospitality of the Southern European experience. Tables overflow with the bounty of the land and flavours are robust and uncomplicated. The pace is languid with an open invitation to enjoy home and hearth. Above all, the emphasis is on quality, taking the time to appreciate the brightness of the sky, the fruits of the vine; reveling in single, glorious moments. One vigneron once said that if you treat a grape like nobility it will return the flavour. It is this character that inspires at Welgegund; not just in our variety of Mediterranean grapes but in our landscape, our lifestyle and the joie de vivre it brings to our wine making. |
