Double Platinum for Chenin Blanc 2017

This wine comes from an old vineyard that was planted in 1974. The dry land vineyard has a north-west aspect and the vines are trellised and planted in rich decomposed granite soil.

After hand harvesting, whole cluster bunches of grapes were then fermented with different yeasts to add the desired complexity. The process included natural fermentation, with 33% of the wine being barrel fermented in French oak and aged independently before final blending. The barrel portion was stirred for lees contact every second week for 4 months, and only a portion of the juice underwent malolactic fermentation.

The flavour profile of this wine is beautifully round, fruit-driven and displays subtle oak character. Noticeable fruits include citrus, stone fruits, pineapple, lime and a hint of white blossoms that compliment the overall aroma.

Although the 2017 season delivered very low yields, it did provide exceptional fruit with highly concentrated flavours, ample finesse and wonderful purity. The 2017 vintage has superb maturing potential and is sure to age gracefully.

At Welgegund we believe that our rich heritage, with a history that dates back to 1777, is one of our greatest blessings and we strive to make wines that are respectful of their venerable past but are a true reflection of their own vintage. Our philosophy is to allow the masterful hand of the wine maker to guide the natural winemaking process of each vintage, with as little intervention as possible and to bottle only exceptional wines.

“At Welgegund Heritage Wines we have a unified vision; we cherish what we have and work hard to bring the best to fruition. Everyone plays a vital role and for that reason everyone deserves this award. We are indescribably proud and look forward to many more great wines.’

Friedrich Kühne,

Winemaker
