“The team at Welgegund Wines have been phenomenal as always, not only throughout the entire production of this wine, but in conquering the trying effects of the drought, to come out on the other end with a Double Platinum award like this, makes us all infinitely proud” – (Friedrich Kühne, Winemaker)

Double Platinum for Chenin Blanc 2017

This wine comes from old vineyards that were planted in 1974. The plantations lie in north-west
facing dry lands, trellised and planted in rich decomposed granite soil. In terms of the winemaking
process, whole cluster bunches were pressed and fermented with different yeasts to add the desired
complexity. The process included natural fermentation, with 33% of the wine being barrel fermented
in French oak and aged independently before final blending. The barrel portion was stirred for lees
contact every second week for 4 months and only a portion of the juice underwent malolactic

The flavour profile of this wine is beautifully round, fruit-driven and displays subtle oak character.
Noticeable fruits include citrus, stone fruits, pineapple, lime and a hint of white blossoms that
compliment the overall aroma.

At Welgegund Heritage Wines the emphasis always remains on our heritage. The fact that the farm
is blessed with a history that dates back to 1777 – and was during the ownership by Cecil John
Rhodes recognised for being one of the best farms in the Boland – means that it’s notable past and
many achievements are taken very seriously. The philosophy is to guide the fruit through the
winemaking process of each vintage with as little interference as possible, and to bottle only
exceptional wines.

Although the 2017 vintage delivered very low yields, it did provide exceptional fruit, with high
concentration, ample finesse and wonderful purity. The 2017 vintage has superb maturing potential
and is sure to age gracefully.

“At Welgegund Heritage Wines we have a unified vision, we cherish what we have and work hard in
bringing the best to fruition. Everyone plays a vital role and for that reason everyone deserves this
award. We are indescribably proud and look forward to many more great wines. (Friedrich Kühne,
