The Welgegund 2019 Old Vine Cinsault wins a Gold Decanter Award

  • Post category:Wines

Our Welgegund Heritage Wines 2019 Old Vine Cinsault has won a coveted Gold Medal at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards with a score of 95 points. The Decanter World Wine Awards has established itself as the largest and one of the most influential wine competitions globally. Its rigorous judging and world class judges are globally respected and a Gold Medal is justifiably prestigious.

At Welgegund Heritage Wines, we strive to make outstanding wines that reflect the rich history of the art of winemaking but are a true expression of their own vintage. By combining traditional practices with state of the art technologies, but always with the gentlest hand, our wines are ever true to their heritage.

Our beautiful farm has a unique terroir and climate, defined by its location in the foothills of the Hawequa mountains and our cultivars are specifically chosen because they thrive in this environment. Our guiding principle is always to create the best possible environment for our grapes to flourish and our vines are lovingly nurtured, but are allowed to develop their own character, making them strong and resilient. Many of our vines are registered Old Vines and the wines produced from their grapes are complex and intense, reflecting the struggles and survival of the vineyards over decades.

At harvest time, we carefully hand-pick our grapes in the cool early morning, ensuring that the winemaking process begins with perfect grapes. We believe that the natural winemaking process should always take centre stage, delicately guided by the masterful hand of our winemaker. This minimal intervention in the cellar allows us to craft wines that truly reflect our characterful vines.

We are delighted with this honour and that this special wine has achieved the recognition that it so richly deserves.
